I have a 2002 ap1 with 88,000 miles and it's burning a quart of oil every 800 miles or so I do drive the car hard and hit vtec many times a day currently what's in it is Honda 10w-30 synthetic blend any suggestions to lower oil consumption I am thinking 10w30 penzoil ultra platinum or castroil edge 10w-30 or do u guys think I should run a 5-40 weight oil

 

Where's the oil going? Blown out the breathers or bypassing the rings?

I've had at least one customer tell me that Castrol syntec 10w30 in the black bottle helped a lot with oil consumption.

 

I'm using 10w-40 GTX high mileage, so far it's helped my oil consumption. Going from ~1,000 miles a quart to ~1,500.

 

You should probably sell your car OP.

 

That too, or take the engine apart and try to fix all the major oil burning features. Re-ring, valve job, valve stem seals, upgrade to ap2 valve cover, new crank and rod bearings or retrofit an 06+ engine.

In all seriousness, some of these engines burn oil some don't, why it happens who knows, maybe some people are better at breaking things in, some people abuse the car, and 3rd or 4th owners have to clean up the mess. It's just the way things go, I say ride it until it breaks, if and when it happens get another engine, or if it's not serious just rebuild the current one if you're brave. Your current engine may last another 20 miles or it may last another 400,000 or somewhere in between. As long as she's making good power, not sputtering, and are willing to live with the oil consumption then just ride it.

 

I am not sure if I check the spark plugs and they are not oily or black I might be able to tell. I am Gona pull the plugs and see how they look and report back. The car makes good power and no cel. I do hear that ap1 burn lots of oil

 

I would try a 15/40 to see if it slows down the oil usage after I replaced the pcv valve. Rotella 15/40 is a very good oil and it won't m/t your wallet.

15w is a bit heavy for cold flow in some conditions and could risk bearing and ring starvation at start up. Id start with a 10/40w non synthetic and see if this helps improve consumption. It should help.

 

I checked the plugs all look clean except for cylinder 4 is a little black around the threads but the electoide seems white
