Default AP1 tranny (2nd gear) question...

The problem is, here where i live the Honda dealership has never worked on any S2K's! So, i hesitate to take it anywhere for a check.

About a few months ago, i noticed when trying to shift into 2nd from 1st, there is a slight grind. I have owned this car for 2 months ago and just had the tranny fluid changed with Mobil 1 10w30 about 7K miles ago. I read the service bulletin, and under that, it says i need to get new 1st and 2nd gears.

Could it be any different problem?? The thing is, if i'm not speed shifting, and just taking it easy, going into 2nd gear is normal enough, but when i'm trying to say downshift to pass a car, it will usually grind (slightly). Is this problem going to get worse, or is there any kind of tranny additive i can do along with another tranny fluid change?

Yea i know... It is an engine lubricant. It is actually Mobil 1 synthetic 10w30. I bought this car used and was already partially modded. I don't think the previous owner took care of this car very well, and I did this "different" tranny change to see if it helped out. 2nd gear never did seem right in this car, but i'll switch the tranny fluid out with some Honda MTF this week. Hopefully it just needs some new lube in there. My girly just recommended some love lube. WOWWW... now just think twice if we let a woman run this country!?!? I'm just kidding... but i'll see what happens with the change.

i like using hondaas mtf...i think the green cap is the newer one. are you saying this grinding just started happening or you just never noticed it?

how are you shifting from 1st to 2nd?

i use to shift by pulling the shifter slightly to the left and down. ive since found out by reading thru the forums that in fact you should just shift STRAIGHT down. seems to work great for me. 2-3 on the other hand is still slighttttly notchy.

ive also found that using a heavy shift knobs makes for smoother shifting. i use skunk2's knob. i think it was something like 4XXgrams.

put in honda mtf (white cap) in the tranny and bleed and flush the clutch/brake fluid and maybe regrease the pivot point in the clutch slave cylinder

the tsb for the gear grind only applied to MY 00 but maybe your synchros are shot to hell and you may have to replace the 1st gear countershaft and the countershaft 2nd gear set.

Thanks for all the advice. Well, today i went out and picked me up some Redline MTF 90 and slipped that in. I could instantly tell a difference. I have not heard a grind at all, and i hope it stays that way. I'll still take it easy on 2nd tho. I only have about 10 miles on it, just with a "test drive."

Does Redline make motor oil as well? Is it worth it or priced to rip?

ill have to try honda mtf next time. I heard tons of pros about both, and no cons... so i figured i couldn't go wrong one way or the other. I will for sure next time, in something like 15K miles, right?
