your situation seems like a fuqed up transmission/synchros and needs a rebuild or replacement.

no fluid can save you at this point...you are at transmission failure.

I've owned a MY 2000 car and my current MY 2003. The transmission is still clunky in the 2003, particularly in the 1-2 shift, but not nearly as much as the original one in the MY 2000 car. The dealer replaced the synchros and spacers in my first car under warrantee and the problem was improved, but not eliminated. It was difficult to convince the dealer to do it at that time, and doubt that the dealer would do this work on a car so far out of its original warrantee period.

I have owned my S for 6 months now and the first 3 months I had a 'notchy' transmission, after reading a lot of posts about this, I tried different ways of shifting gears from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, etc. try this: rev up to 4K rpm, if you let go the gas it will drop 2K rpms to the next gear, instead when you move the lever to 2nd, give it a little gas to keep it at 3K rpms which is the rpms that you will be in. In other words rev match and move the lever in 2 motions, from 1st to neutral, rev, neutral to 2nd, after a while it will come natural, it takes a little practice to get it right. Now I don't have the 'notchy' feeling anymore, when I get on it hard it shifts fine in all the gears.

i don't think people will accep double-clutching as the solution.

if double clutching is the solution, then we wouldn't need synchro's to begin with.

i've completed eliminated 1-2 grinds by completely depressing the clutch pedal...waiting a second, then shifting to 2nd.

There is a lot of info. on this subject, I have read a lot of it, unless you change your driving habits, you will be faced with the same issue in the future. This is not to say that there maybe something wrong with your transmission anyway. I suggest you let another owner of an S that has had his car for a while drive your car to see if he experiences the same problem as you are or if it is you not used to this car. Experience is very useless because the only one that can use it is the very person that aquired it.

haven't read any of the replies, but i read your post, and i had the same problem on my used '00. since i'm mechanically disinclined to do any work or look into it, i just got a new tranny. hope you won't have to go to those lengths, cause it's expensive as hell.

This is another one of those things that I've never seen on my MY00 car. Shifting is notchy when the box is cold, but I short shift and time the shifts to avoid grinding when the box is cold, and the car shifts perfectly once the gearbox is thoroughly warmed up. When I get a grind it is always, without exception, due to my shift timing being off.

I have absolutely no idea whether or not other people have problems because their shift timing is off a little (because it is pretty critical), and don't have a clue how many transmission problems may be related to repeated "grinding" shifts, but I time my shifts to avoid grinds and crunches and haven't had any issues at all with the way my MY00 S2000 shifts. In fact, I think it's the quickest shifting production car I've ever driven. I believe that transmission designs that allow quicker shifts tend to be more critical of shift timing, and that this may have something to do with all the grinding problems people have.

With older cars the synchros are apt to be shot from the abuse of a previous owner.

mine was a previous owner issue.

i had the noise from the moment i bought my car, but i purchased it fairly cheap, and now i know why. the cost of replacing the transmission would've probably gotten me an s2k in much better condition. but in any case, i love my car and it runs perfectly fine now, except for the ignition coil i need to get it back on the road.

As the cars age and have more and more "previous owners," we're going to be seeing a lot more of this kind of thing. Nice to hear that you were able to get your older S2000 sorted out without too much hassle.
