Default AP2 into AP1 - Problems with Motor Swap - (2.0 ->2.2)

Thanks for the great forum. I hope you guys can help me out with something. I just bought a 2001 S2k that just weeks ago had its engine blown. The previous owner bought a 2.2 and swapped it in himself but the vtec doesn't work. I personally have not driven the car, I was out of state, but I had somebody drive it and pick it up for me. So, as of right now I haven't seen the car in person. These are the specs:

Done by previous owner:
  • Engine blown while revving it to 9k 'to impress girls'. Who knows if this is true.
  • Swapped in 2005 2.2 with 50k on it.
  • Tried both the AP1 and AP2 ecus, both won't engage vtec.
  • Sold it to me.

Done by wife:
  • Checked oil (it is halfway between H and L).

Unknowns:
My wife can't drive a stick so I can't have her go out and test things, unfortunately. So I have to wait a few days to really see what is up with the car, but in the meantime this is what I have gathered could be wrong.
  • Low oil.
  • Not letting car warm up.
  • Possibly sensors missing or different on this motor.
  • Stuff not hooked up that should be.

What I am hoping to find is maybe a guide or thread or something that sort of lays out the things that should be done in swapping a 2.2 (2005) to an AP1. Or at least garner some knowledge from you all. What sort of things could be missing from this motor/harness or anything else that could have been overlooked? Thanks!

Was it the white one out of San Angelo, TX? Sorry to hear about your problem, wish I had an answer!

i take my car to 9k sometimes so i doubt that blew his motor unless it was very low on oil while he did it.

The engine is designed to hit 9k with no problems. The engine would blow at something like 11k rpm. More likely...he might have blown it by misshifting.

As for the vtec, I know there is a common problem with the vtec solenoid going bad. I've seen posts on the board about it, might want to look into that.

Nope, not the one from texas.

And the check engine light is not on.

About the PO and how he blew it up, I have no idea, this is just what he said.

The question is: Does anybody know the things that need to be done when swapping a 2005 2.2 into an AP1?

If I can get a list of those things or the technical differences between the motors, then maybe I can figure out what is wrong.

Thanks for the reply. I had searched for a few days and didn't find definitive information. It was unclear to me why people were doing the engine swap but still using the AP1 ecu, and then also saying either one would work, etc. If it was merely for the rpm gain then that is fine, but I figured it was because some components were different.

It now seems clear that:
  • The AP2 F22c1 engine from 04-05 can be swapped into the AP1 using any ecu from 00-05 (has different fuel maps and redlines, however).
  • The AP2 F22c1 engine from 06-09 can be swapped but you need to swap the valve cover and some sensors over as well. (some details Here.)
  • The inverse of the previous things could be done if you would like a 2.0 in an 04+.

I suppose this means that the engine harness is identical for the F22c1 and the F20c.

So, in my case, it looks like I need to look out for cut wires or things not hooked up, and bad parts (like solenoid and whatnot), because everything else should be good.
