Is there a way to perhaps mark the areas one should look for as all these pics seem the same to me? I can't tell what's sunken in or not or what level the edges of the retainers should be aligned with etc. I had AP2 retainers installed in MY01 and no less than a week after a freind misshifted 3rd to 2nd. I didnt hear the tires screech or anything but I did feel the momentum shift quickly and the car decelerated a lot. I'm not sure if he caught the clutch in time but it sucked nonethless. I had my car inspected by a local shop but to be frank, I'm not sure they even knew what to look for. To me, all retainers looked fine. There were no cracks and they all seemed t olook identical in terms of depth etc. but again, if someone could explain the theory of what to look for or doctor those pics. That would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Look at the retainer on the left in this pic, it is severely broken. The one on the right is also broken, but not as much. You will not see cracks, you will see the valve and keepers sunk down revealing the inner retainer wall. If you can see any measureable retainer inner wall showing, you have broken retainers.

Somehow a bunch of useless pics got added, which will make things very confusing. Who added them back?

This is the best pic from above showing a good retainer.

Thanks for the clarification. I've always thought there were no way to check them unless you somehow are able to look at the bottom of the retainers.

But in the last posted pic, you really can't see if there's any sinking in the retainer itself. Still seems difficult to the untrained eye I suppose.

I can tell that last pic is a perfect retainer. No wall showing, and the keepers sit right at the bottom of the retainer taper. Need to get a pic in here of one barely cracked.

Even the tiniest cracks will send the retainer upwards on the keepers and reveal a little bit of retainer wall.

Sorry about that billman, I had taken more just in case the ones I had posted weren't good enough, posted them without seeing that the first batch was enough, went ahead and deleted a few.

Ok fixed again, all pics show retainer/keeper relative positioning.

This thread led me to check mine out today. ALL of my keepers are very slightly below the top surface of the retainers. They all look like this, none are higher or lower. My pics of the intake side came out blurry cause I couldn't get the camera in a good position, but they look the same as these. Do I have a problem ?
