Hi, just last night my left rear wheel area started making the sound you can hear in the video. I have read through the threads about the axle nut sound, but most people are just describing the sound so its hard to compare it when there is no video. I have been driving it around all of today and sometimes it makes the sound, other times it does not. But when it does it only happens at speeds around 10km/h, or about as slow as you can go in first. I was thinking that maybe the locking nut on the inside of my valve stem came off and was clanging around inside the rim. Is that even possible? Or is it the axle nut sound? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think so. It pretty just makes a click when you start out, not all the time when you're moving.

 

Holy mother. Sounds like something is loose hanging down from under your car and swinging against metal??

Thanks. It does sounds like something is loose and catching on the wheel as it spins, but I've looked everywhere and can't see a thing. Guess I'll have to get it on a hoist to get a better look.

 

That can definitely be an axle nut issue.

stage 1- single click when starting
stage 2- multiple clicks while in motion
stage 3- destroyed hubs and bearing

Starting out doesnt hurt anything.

Those noises you are hearing is the race galling against the hub. Do the axle nut tsb, NOW.

Besides, all s2ks 2000-2009 need it.

 

yup def sounds like axle nut. had the same sound when my bearing went. didn't know what it was and kept driving it till it started creaking and groaning. like Billman said, do TSB now. you might be able to save it.

 

Alright thanks. Now I just have to see if I can find a 36mm socket. The biggest I've found so far in my shop is a 32mm.

 

Lots of times the shops won't sell the socket but just let you rent it out. That's what I had to do. $15 deposit then once I brought it back I got my money back, so no charge.

 

So I went and bought a 36mm socket ($12) to use with my breaker bar. It's only a 1/2 inch and seemed to be on the verge of breaking but I was able to get the nuts tightend to about 2 oclock. As soon as I started driving the clanging started again. So I pulled the whole wheel off and sure enough the sound is coming from INSIDE the tire. I can roll the wheel around and hear it clang to the bottom of the wheel. I just had my RPF1s installed a couple weeks ago, so the only thing it can be is one of the nuts holding the valve stem on must have come loose. Anyway I'm glad I tightened the axle nuts so I don't have to worry about that anymore. Now I just have to make an appointment and get my tire off and get that nut back on.
