Run a different oil brand, check your pcv valve and replace if more than 2 years old, see if you can find an 04-05 ap2 valvecover. Some things worth trying before considering opening up the motor. The average s2k can go well past 146k miles without needing an overhaul if it has been treated properly, so you don't necessarily have to look at a re-build.

How much do you consider to be "a lot"? How much oil are you using? Are you in VTEC a lot? The S will burn more than most because of VTEC, at least that's my understanding.

You mean that 2500 miles after an oil change you are only 1/5 or so up on the dipstick? The top and bottom of the measuring area on the dipstick is 1 quart, not the whole oil capacity.

That means you have burned about 4/5 of a quart in 2500 miles. That's like 1/3 of a quart every 1,000 miles.

That's pretty normal (better than normal for an AP1) and nothing to be alarmed about whatsoever!

The AP2 valve cover (04-05 model only! 06-08 won't work) has the PCV valve in a different location and has a baffle to prevent oil from being blown out during hard right turns when the crankcase has positive pressure. If your oil usage is as you state, you have no need at all.

so on the dipstick your saying that the part that has the squigidly lines is only a quart? like when i pull the dipstick out there is really no oil on the dipstick at all.. so there is still oil in the pan???

sorry, on the valvecover recommendation, the 04-05 cover allows you to use the improved pcv system of the ap2's, it has helped quite a bit on my 2002 ap1, but it depends on your driving style as well. It has helped in my situation.

Judging by the description of your oil consumption it doesn't seem anywhere near the critical level, but you better get in the habit of checking the oil level more often - once a week or every time you fill up the fuel tank, you can do some damage if you run the car with a low oil level.

If you aren't married to Royal Purple try a different brand of oil and compare the results.

Yes, the distance between H and L with the squiggly lines is 1 quart. No oil on the stick means you are over a quart low...exactly how much is unknown, but more than 1 quart.
