Default Basic Engine Tuning....

I'm looking to smooth out my engine and perhaps decrease some of the sound while at idle. If I could get more HP that would be a bonus, but not req'd.

Is there some basic stuff people have had done, or can do? Or can a shop do some work on it that would be for the benefit of the engine?

I'm also looking at switching to syn oil...

The basics that can be done will be:

-Oil change
-spark plug change
-transmission/diff fluids
-clean the throttle body/air filter
-clean up all the grounds
-reset ECU

These things is basically servcing the engine and there are no adjustment to the engine.

You could have your valves adjusted too. Its not required until 105k, but some people have found benefit to doing them early.

You could do alot of mild things to your car that doesn't require a shop to do them. Changing your plugs is the easiest thing to do.

What happens to the ECU over time? Does it drift out of factory specs or something? What's involved in resetting it? Can I do it or does the dealer need to do it? When should you do this? I have 76,000mi and it's never been done.

Yeah, I'm surprised to see the ECU drifting. I wasn't sure if the timing could be adjusted along with the valvetrain...

I've got 12k on the car so far and it's been great. But like others, I've got the addiction to make it better.

Plus it's my daily driver in Detroit, so I suspect the winter has had an effect....

Anyone have spark plugs they recommend?

The PCM doesn't "drift" out of specs. It does have the ability to learn and modify the timing maps based on temperture and knock sensore feedback. A "reset" lets the PCM forget any learned data. You'll be hard pressed to notice the minimal HP gain from reseting it. If you can feel the 3-5hp, your butt dyno is more sensitive than mine.

FYI-
There would be no need to even touch your virigin car at 12k. You wouldn't need to touch the timing much either since your timing belt hardly ever throws off your timing unless the belt snaps

Especially since the car uses a timing chain, not a belt.

And the timing is not adjustable as well...

ECU Drifting...not possible
