Default Benefits of V-Mounted Radiator??

As I'm sure many of you know, CWest's prototype race car (the black one) is using a v mounted radiator set up. I just saw the shroud is even for sale from BP (http://www.bulletproofautomotive.com/catal...ail.php?ID=2209) .

Ok now perhas I am missing something key here, but wasn't the vmount thing invented so that equal amounts of air could get to the radiator AND an intercooler in turbo charged cars (so they didnt block eachother?). Hell its even in the name "V" mount came from the fact that the intercooler and radiator make a V when viewed from the side.

CWest's car is not turbocharged, so why go through all the rediculous fabrication they did? Is the extra air flow directed from the front bumper up through their dry carbon race hood THAT much better than in the stock location?

Just seeing if anyone has any more insight into this. I would love to experiment with such a setup, but its simply too much fabrication for too little gain in cooling IMHO.

Interesting, I would also like to hear more about this.

:just a guess:

Looks like the rad is narrower than OEM so the CAI they have (neat by the way) can get a smooth path to the front of the car. SO the V-mount might allow them to get enough surface area to compensate for the narrow radiatior.

??

Anyway, I really dig the CAI. Wish Honda could have made the OEM radiator support have a cutout or angle just below the OEM intake. This way the Spoon style wouldn't run into a "pinch" at that point.

That's not technically a V-mount since you don't have an intercooler. The RX-7 (FD) has the radiator placed in roughly the same manner. One benefit is that you can fit a decent sized radiator in and still keep the hoodline low. In the S2000 case I suspect they're doing in purely for the aerodynamic benefit. My guess is they have the whole underbody covered up and vent the air out the top of the hood to decrease lift at the front of the car.

I can help with this question.

Whether it be a radiator or an intercooler, if you mount it at an angle to the oncoming stream of air, it forces the air to slow down as it's going through the cooling fins. It makes the air stay in contact with the cooling fins longer thus increasing the efficiency of the radiator. Almost all F1 racing teams mount their intercoolers at an angle inside their intake ducts. If you have ever seen an F1 car with the engine cover off, you will see this.

This thread might help with some of our theory

Quite a project if ya ask me Looks like I might be partially correct on the CAI idea.

...they made a vent just like in F1cars, the radiators are in vents where the air can pass through... if u can maintain air travel which they can w/ the hood letting air out...u can keep the car running cooler under higher stress...

also notice their new exhaust... =)
