Default Brake Rotor Resurfacing???

Hi all

Just wondering if resurfacing the rotors is a good idea, or is it better to just replace the rotors.

also if anyone has done this?
how were the results?
how much it should cost per rotor?

Thanks,
Bo

I haven't done it on my S2000 yet, but I've had plenty of rotors turned in the past. The last time I had it done, it cost me $10.00 per rotor. I paid $5.00 each a few years back. They work fine, but if you do a lot of hard driving, the reduced mass will make them a little more prone to warpage, resulting in brake chatter.

Some people that track their cars won't get their rotors turned for this reason. So it's your call. Personally, if you're not a very aggressive driver, save yourself a few bucks.

Yes, it is a good idea if you have grooved and/or unevenly worn rotors that have sufficient thickness to turn them. I've done this up to two times and still had more than enough thickness for street use.

Before you proceed, be sure that there's a good reason to turn the rotors. Sometimes, uneven pad deposition on the rotor surface will result in pulsations that many people mistakenly associate with warped rotors.

I've paid $5-12 per rotor, depending on the shop and how desperate I was.

That's an interesting read, Jguerdat. I've never seen it explained that way before, but it sure makes sense. Thanks for posting.

Given the link I provided above, why? Are the rotors actually heavily scored or have damage that needs to be resurfaced or is it just a pulsating? If the latter, you may well just have uneven deposits which can be removed or ignored. I've even noticed short term improvements just by using wheel brake dust remover which seemed to remove or reduce some of the pulsating feel.

^^^ the thickness should be on the rotor, on the outside by the "cap".

I've done several cars brakes including my Z and I never turn them unless theres groves and what not, or wheel shaking. But I've never had those isseus though so I never turn them. I usually do a bed in procedure when I install new pads (10 high speed decelerations). My Z's front rotors lasted 60k I think. Still on the original rear rotors & I changed the rear pads at 75k. The front pads have been changed 3 times.

Car now has 86k.

I'm sure there are a lot of folks that may think this is excessive, but I take no chances with tires and brakes.

Whenever I get new pads, I also get new rotors. EBC has been working fine for me this far, and it's not that expensive to go this route. I'm not that hard on brakes either, so I'm not having to change out pads every 10 or 15k.

In the past I've also had bad luck with having rotors turned and then warping soon after....that really ticks me off....so now I just replace it all together.

It's your call.....just adding my $.02 for what it's worth.
