Brand New Engine Break In- How to....
Okay Boys and Girls,
This is my very first post since I joined S2Ki. I just bought a brand new 2005 Rio Yellow Pearl and I have been reading up on engine break in. And, yes, I have performed the "SEARCH" function many many times. But everytime I ended up reading up upon the honda secret break in engine oil, the kind of engine oil your should use during and after the engine run-in, the length and the timing of the first oil change. However, I have not come across a single thread that specifically gives the "how-to" of breaking in the new S2000 engine. I know some suggested break-in the way you plan to drive the car. But since it's not for sure.
So what I do are followings:
1) during first 600miles I keep my rev under 5,500rpm
2) I warm up my engine oil before I go
3) I gradually vary the rpm in each gear as much and as often as possible up to only 5000rpm for now.
4) And after reading from the forum....I learn that I need to keep an eye of my oil. thanks guys.
Coz back at the evolutionm.net, we have been having this HUGE debate over the whole engine break in methods. Don't plan to start it over here, but namely, we have been fighting over these two schools of thought...1) break in super hard to sit the ring right within the first 20-50miles or so....then change oil....2) follow the manual and baby the engine for so many miles then gradually opening it up.
But I think the keys are "gradually" and "varying rpm". How do you guys break in your S2000 when first got it?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Congrats on the purchase. My friend just got a 2005 Rio as well on Tuesday.
For me, I just follow the Owner's Manual on Break-in.
Keep Revs under 5500 rpms for first 600 miles.
Vary rpms.
Do not change oil until first scheduled maintenance (3750 for severe or 7500 for normal). Change with regular 10w30 dino oil.
If you decide to switch over to synthetic in the future, the consensus here is to wait until you have 10,000 miles. Some have switch over earlier without problems. Its really up to you on this.
Hope that helps.

You do not need to warm up your engine before you go, just take it easy (shift at 3000 or 3500 rpm) the first couple miles after cold start.
You want to keep factory filled oil for atleast 3750 miles, because it has special additive(s) to help break-in the S2000's engine.
Watch out for the cops, your Rio Yellow S2000 is stand out from the traffic and they can see you from miles away.

Yeah, I got it last Sunday. So, I took it for a drive along the coast to Santa Barbara. It was a blast. Everyone on the road was staring at us. But the important thing is that I got to stretch its legs a bit. Varying rpm between 3k-5k thru 4th-6th gear on the high way and 1st-3rd on the local. Great Great Car!!! Can't wait till the break-in's over.
So, how did it work out for you? Did your S2K consume some oil some said during their break in? Did you need to refill in up? Coz that's seem to be the big debate over here... How about after the break in? Any oil buring issue? Do you feel the motor getting notably stronger after the run-in??

Coz I saw in on BestMotoring...where they raced a brand new S2K with only 60miles on it at Tsukuba where the S2K finished last. Racing a brand new engine is kinda dumb anyway.....
then later...after they broke in the engine it tore up their track. So....you saw notably improvement of the engine after the run-in.....

No oil burning here for me. I just passed 8000 miles on my 2005 model and no measurable oil loss. I check my oil every gas fillup.
Can't say the same for my 2002 model. It consumed 1 quart of oil every oil change. I change my oil at ~3750 miles.
From what people have reported here, alot of people with 2000-2003 models have some oil consumption issues. Seems to be the norm for the AP1 model.
I haven't read of any oil consumption issues with the 2004+ yet. Knock on wood.

Really!!??? Why would anyone actually read the owner's manual and do what it says?
