For the rear, you need to screw it and press it. The front just needs to be pressed in.

You can get a tool like this one from your local Autoparts store.

This is a Snap-On and costs only 17.95. Should be cheaper at your local auto parts store.

No, it does not sound like you are missing something. What is the condition of the rubber boot on the piston? If it is broken, it could be frozen by the dirt that got in there.

That looks to be further out then normal. Does it look like it is off center? I.E. going it sideways? I normally use a large set of slip joint pliers to do it. I can't see why you would break a C clamp that large.

There is clearly something wrong. I would remove the piston and clean the bore and piston. It is almost all the way out already.

You've pushed the piston out of it's bore. The piston is cocked in the caliper, which is why you can't push it back in.

The caliper will have to removed from the car, and the piston removed by applying compressed air to the line fitting. Then you get to reassemble everything with a new piston seal and dust boot.

Or you go and buy a re-manufactured caliper.

The brake system will need to be bleed after the caliper is removed/replaced.
