broken rear diff or axle!?
havent had time to get it looked at yet but other day was out driftn wit my buddy jon and his 240, and went 2 rev it up a little and dump the clutch then heard a thud! Cars stock except for intake and act pp,flywheel, and clutch disc. So i towed the car home by a rope. In neutral its fine and when you engage clutch then go to put in gear and give it some gas you hear grinding metal! It made a lil noise when i was getting towed and id go to make a turn! Its prolly the diff but it sounded the same when my grandma broke a axle on her car but that was front wheel drive! Any ideas on what it is!!!!
could be axle. whenever you engage gears if it makes a grinding noise then more then likely it is the axle, the diff normally never breaks every tooth so instead you get a thud noise while you move. the axle is a WHOLE lot cheaper
yea makes a grinding noise when i put it in first and try to drive away! there was no gear oil leaking and when i was getn towed by my buddy didnt make any noise until i tried to turn
In the time it took you to post this you could have wedged yourself underneath the car and tugged on the axle to check to play. More than likely you would see grease splattered all underneath the car from where it grenaded. Check the inside cv joints (where they bolt to the differential. If everything is ok it's your diff. It is possible to break both the diff and the axles at the same time.
i broke an axle at the track this weekend. I deserved to break it because of how i launched the car!
This was the cause

This is how i felt

This was how i got home

and this was the result

it was a broken spider, that fits inside the bucket of the inner CV joint. If you can put it into gear and you hear some spinning. get under the car and see whats moving around. If one of the output flanges on the diff is spinning, more likely than not its an axle! Which is much much cheaper than a Diff! Good luck! With the help of friends, i drove home that night with a new axle!

+1 on crawling under the car and wiggling the axle. If it moves around it's definitely the axle. Probably the driver's side as that seems to be the one that likes to break. If it doesn't move, drain the diff fluid and see what it looks like.
If turns out to be an axle PM me and I'll sell ya one. After breaking my 2nd one I started stockpiling those bad boys anytime I came across one. I think I could bear to let one go
