I called the dealer the other day to ask about part numbers for the HVAC control unit. Sure enough it changed for 2002. Lists for about $380, $300 if you know someone. ( this will allow you to turn the ac off while running the defrosters)
Edit to post...Just learned thanks to NTPHAN, 02 and 03 S2000's A/C can be self programmed to allow A/C off while defrosting! No tools or cash required. Just read the threads!

thanks billman, and - ouch! my wallet hurts. I know I'm considering it. Or maybe pepes with 00-01's want to swap who think this is a good feature. I don't like it at all. My car is supposed to be a democracy, not the Iron Will Honda

Hey! your car's 436 after mine. cool.

Neons are the same way. To fix the problem, they simply cut a wire inside the hvac. Then the a/c only turns on when you want it to.. SOmeone might one to check that out.

do not know how to link you so look up this thread:

The Annoying A/C Controls ( 1 2 ) rossmon1
(01-25-03 02:45PM)

do not cut any wires, change any parts, it is just a matter of the right sequence of holding buttons while turning on ignition switch.

see the thread.

try this:

Many 2002 owners have found themselves at odds with the factory settings for the use of A/C along with the defroster. The steps outlined below do not change the A/C default, but they do make it possible to turn the A/C off after engaging the defroster.

First, we should take a look at the reasoning behind this... The process of air conditioning removes moisture from the air. This dry air works better for removing fog from the windows. To assist with defrosting, Honda has "programmed" the HVAC system to engage the A/C whenever the defroster is turned on. The trouble is, you cannot turn it off.

To deactivate automatic a/c feature on a 2002+ S2000:

1) Turn the ignition switch "on," but dont start the car.
2) Turn fan speed off.
3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area).
4) Turn vent knob to all the way to the left (panel position).
5) Turn the ignitions switch "off."
6) Hold down both air recirculation button and a/c button while turning the ignition switch "on." Nothing lights up initially, keep waiting. The orange air recirculation indicator on the button will start flashing.
7) Continue holding both buttons until the orange air recirculation indicator stops flashing, then let go.

To reactivate automatic a/c feature on 2002 s2000:

1) Turn vehicle off.
2) Turn fan knob off.
3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area).
4) Turn vent knob all the way to the right (defrost position).
5) Hold down both air recirculation button and a/c button while starting car.
6) Continue holding for 7 seconds until air recirculation button stops flashing.
7) After the 7 seconds described in step 6, the recirculation button will start to flash. Continue to hold the button for another 7 seconds. After this, the a/c light will turn to green and it's finished!

i hope this is what you need.

Ken - I'm gonna try that as soon as I can. All I want is the option. 9 times out or 10 I don't need AC to run with the defroster. I just need the window to be warm so the crap on the outside will go away. thanks for looking it up!

and spapdx - you cruel bastard
