Default A/C Question

Hi I was wondering, if there is no freon in my ac system, will air conditioning even work, my compressor does not click on at all, a mechanic explained to me that the ac preesur switch knows if there is to much pressure or not enough and opens the circuit preventing the ac to come on, hense the compessor not working. This is all, so the compressor does not seize in the event that there is no freon in the system lubricating it, is this a fact.

The compressor will not come on without any refrigerant in the system. The compressor will not be damaged as only the clutch is freewheeling.

Is there any way to make sure there is no freon in system, when I press ac button nothing happens, mechanic said that its the ac pressure switch that is preventing it from coming on.

Yes, there is a pressure switch for just that reason.

Cool how much would it cost for the system to be recharged.

well your AC system is a closed system meaning you have a leak somewhere. Why doesnt your mechanic hook up and measure the pressure? This will determine if you are empty and have a leak.

I do HVAC and if you were around here i would charge you around 80 bucks, thats for only puttin your system on a vaccum and then recharging your system.
BUT you cant pull a system under vaccum if there is a small leak somewhere.
you HAVE to find the leak and fix it or you'll have noncondensibles inside the system that will eventually slug your compressor (Harm)

Oh and there is a low pressue switch in the system, but not a too much refrigerant pressue switch.
You'll just be overcharged and feed liquid to the compressor.
And eventually slug it.

It's both a high and low pressure safety switch.
