Can a bad air pump put you in limp mode?
I started my car for the second time today air pump didn't come on and I got a CEL. I don't have my scanner with me so I can't pull the code. The car is also in limp mode. I though you could still drive with a bad air pump.
02 with 05 engine ecu and trans.
Since I can't pull the code I can't figure out what's wrong, any guesses? VTEC solenoid? Cam angle sensor? Ground? ECU? Fuse? Any tips about where to start once I get my scanner back tomorrow?

Air pump malfunctioning won't put you in limp mode...but a malfunctioning EGR might
The code will point you in the right direction. Or jump pins 4 and 9 on the OBD port and get the code that way

Car idles fine, isn't misfiring in idle, but it dies if I give it gas, like it tries to accelerate but doesn't, unless I give it a lot of gas, then it bounces off 3,000rpm. I don't think there's anything wrong with the engine itself.
*edit or do you mean EVAP?

Hopefully it's just a bunch of cylinder misfires. I checked what I could, no blown fuses, everything is getting power. If it's misfires then it's likely bad coil packs.

It is common when working on the car to accidentally leave one of the vac lines pulled off from that small metal tube (dual tube with two lines on it) and not notice it. The line will lay right next to the tube so it is not immediately noticeable sometimes. That in turn will prevent the air pump from functioning on start up and will throw a code. I have had this happen myself. I did not drive it after though as the code was set right after startup and I found the issue and fixed it, so cannot say how the car ran. I would expect it to run as it would with a vacuum leak but not go into limp mode. But, check those lines right at the top front of the motor, next to the intake just to be sure.
Both times I have had that line loose, CEL came on about 30 sec after starting the car. Was always after I had been working around the intake and just inadvertently pulled the line off. CEL should come on right after the air pump was supposed to cycle. If left off it would likely be a significant enough vac leak to notice and I suspect would set a lean code if you try to drive it much.
