Must have still been cold.
8 bars.
To tell you the truth I'm not too sure about how many bars there are when the car has been properly warmed up.

i-VTEC on AP2

IIRC throttle input does have an impact on Vtec engagement though. I believe it has a range it will engage in. (Ex: 5800 rpms to 6400 rpms something like that) If you're WOT it'll come on sooner, and if you're easy on the throttle it'll come on later. It won't completly shut you down though if you're not WOT.

he forgot about the i-vtec that the ap2's come with.
the "i" stands for "inteligent".
the vtec system has both a brain and an attitude with this system now.
the one possibility of why you can't rev past 7K is because you're not doing it hard enough. you gotta be WOT as well as have your heart and mind set to it. you must "think" vtec for it to hit.
if you're going at it 70% throttle, the factory vtec controller goes "whoa! hold up a sec bro. you aint doin it right. i'm not letting you into vtec all emo-like. it's either all vtec or nothing yo! so when 6.5k hits, you can be like WOOO while your left hand is at 12:00 and your right hand resting on the shifter. "
so the computer cuts off fuel at 7k rpm. it doesnt want you to creep into vtec. it wants you to HULK SMASH INTO VTEC!

I tried doing that also when i tried to race some guy at lunch time he was talking smack lol but i went straight out into not warming up the car and once before i hit vtec it "blocked" it out and i was like wtf!! so once the car warmed up it kicked in so pretty much don't try to hit vtec when the engine is cold and correct me if im wrong, but if you run your engine hardcore without heating it up can do some potential damage, kinda like how we stretch and warm up before we exercise and if we go hard core into a workout can pull a muscle is the same as a viechle when you run it cold.

My AP2 wont engage Vtec with only 3 bars showing. I think 4 or 5 are required.
AP1's need 3 bars before they can go... "vtec-ing" if you will
I thought this was pretty common knowledge...

As already stated in this thread.... AP2's need 8 bars to be fully warmed up and be allowed into vtec.

I'd imagine the AP2 will let the car into VTEC with 6 or 7 bars as well.
