Default Car "lunges" forward

Interesting thing happens. I'm at a stoplight in neutral.. the light turns green so I press in the clutch pedal the put it in 1st. As it goes into 1st gear, the car will lunge forward slightly. It's not a big lurching motion, but the car will move slightly.

Before you ask, yes, the clutch pedal is pressed all the way in. I've been futzing with it the last few days. It's almost like the clutch doesn't fully release. I dunno.. that's why I'm asking. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Try pulling against the second gear synchros before engagning first. As far as I'm aware my car doesn't "clunk" at all when I shift into first, but I'll try to pay more attention to first gear engagement next time I take the car out. If there is any "clunk" at all, it's not anything that other cars don't do, or I'm pretty sure I'd have noticed it.

i don't think i've tried (paying attention at least) the 2nd before 1st thing, but revving the engine a little before putting it in first will get rid of it as well. but i just learned to live with it...a lot of people have posted about a clunk so hopefully it's nothing too serious.

Try engaging second before first when stopped. It's easier on the transmission, and I think you'll be able to feel the difference (especially when the gearbox is cold).

One could also wait 2-3 seconds before shifting it into first.

That gives the primary input shaft in the gearbox time to slow down.
That shaft is spining at idle revs, being around 800 rpm?
Pressing the clutch disconnects it from the engine and it begins to slow down.
First geas synchro has to slow it down (to a complete stop) to engage first gear.
The mass of the spinning shaft is enough to give the car a little push forward and/or a clunck.

With my car parked in a garage box (warmed up gearbox/engine) in neutral I can hear the gearbox spin, then when I press the clutch the "noise" stops after 2-3 seconds.

^ oh is that why? i don't think i ever came across an explanation of why the clunk occurred. i'll try out both. OP is this the same problem you've been having? or does your car actually move forward?

^^ I've been wondering the same thing. The word "lunge" makes me think the car is moving forward, as if the clutch were not fully disengaged.

Right... If I didn't have the brake pressed, I'm guessing the car would roll forward a few inches (haven't tried that), but yes, the car does make a small jerk forward as it goes into 1st gear.

I will try waiting 2-3 sec. after I engage the clutch pedal and see if it makes a difference. The explanation from SpitfireS seems to makes sence. I can live with it, but I've never experienced it before with any other car.
