as far as i know, the closest that has been made was with metal matrix composite. pretty darn strong with half the weight because the internal structure is looks like fibers of metals. i believe opel did that in DTM when they were kicking everyones butt a few years ago. then it got outlawed. they did use nikasil liners (i believe the same stuff in the s2000)
