Default Catalytic converter Broken

Hi

Ive got an AP2 06 Honda with a broken CAT. mechanic says the internals are rattling around so its shot. I want to replace it but it costs circa 1500 from Honda. Anybody have any views on a non OEM sports Cat replacement which will pass emissions and wont have to be swapped out come MOT time. I have seen BERK as a manufacturer. are they any good?

Also I only noticed the problem after grounding out on a speedbump... mechanic says there is no external damage to indicate it was the cause but it started rattling straight after.

I would be grateful for any help.

I thought emission equipment has an 8 year warranty... any chance Honda will eat this one?

I believe it's 9 years in the US, but OP is in UK, so no clue.

If the Berk HFC will passion emissions in UK, definitely get that rather than OEM. OEM is ridiculously expensive. The removal/installation isn't that bad either, especially once you get the bolts to break loose. I replaced mine with a used OEM, but only because I was just getting the car ready to sell.

High flow cats aren't always legal and laws get confusing sometimes regarding them. You can usually get an OEM cat for 100 USD these days so I would just do that.
If you know for sure that high flow cats are legal in your country, and you want a little added power, then the extra money may be worth it

Try and pickup a used one in the WTB forum. Should be around 100 bucks.

If you are going to want more power than stock, get a high flow cat. Your next purchase should then be Hondata, and a tune (eTune is a good option). With a high flow cat you can lower vtec rpm (which can be setup for under full throttle only), which will really boost power under the torque curve. You can't do this with the stock cat without losing a lot of power at that rpm range.

Gernby did some extensive testing on all this. Is research is in several threads in here. You can find his posts by searching.

The high flow cat by itself doesn't do much to give more power, unless you add tuning to take advantage of it.

Otherwise if you're good with stock power, get used OEM as suggested, about $100 USD here in the States (YMMV accross the pond).

Keep in mind the used one may break apart as well. It is a known issue.
