The problem with cracked retainers is there is no "preset" time limit on when they will fail.
They will let go when they get around to it.

Until you take the head off get more details of the damage
Look for wear marks on the #3 intake lobes.
Cracked retainers sit higher up the valve stem and, if they get high enough, touch the cam lobe.

Save yourself the trouble and by a spy cam with light. Take a look at it without taking the motor apart. No shop is going to rip it apart before they determine if it's even fixable.

You should do the same.

Really? I think any new $100 camera can do that. I actually reduced the hell out of those pictures to make it reasonable for the web.

Anyway, I have "misshifted" a few times, but the only time it was the wrong way was in an Acura GSR I used to have. After that, I learned the proper way to shift.

As a result, the few times I have "misshifted" since were all in the "up" direction, which, while embarassing, is not disastrous.

Anyway, it will take some time for more photos. I live in an apartment block, so I still have to figure out where to take this thing apart.
Macro mode.

no need to buy a light... take it apart.

you will be able to tell what failed first as soon as you get the cams out.

This is also why I NEED to find a proper explanation for this failure, because if I am to accept "dropped a valve", and just walk away, then I will never again by ANY car whose engine can't be replaced for less than a $100.
Have fun with that.

You bought the car used and ignored early warning signs for the WEEKS prior, then you're indignant that the car broke?

Honda isn't losing any money here.

Maybe public transportation would suit you better...

No need to be involved at all, just pay the monthly fee and show up.

Is one misfire every few days really a warning of impending complete annihilation of the engine? Especially with so many other variables? (I just moved to Europe from the USA, every fluid I use in the car is different that what I

damn this is defiently a shitty situation. i am interested in what caused this and what is the actual outcome vs. peoples opinions on the situation at hand.

if you take the valve cover off you will be able to tell almost immediately what caused it.

if the retainer broke it will be missing and the sping will be flopping around, if the valve bent, then broke everything will look mostly normal.
