Default CEL CODES + Smog Certificate

Sup guys,

I was at the smog inspection station at a mobil station to get a smog check.

The guy does the inspection and charges me $40 for the inspection, but says that because I have 3 CEL codes, the computer will not print out the certificate, even though I passed the inspection. He says I need to get the CEL Codes fixed and cleared and bring it back to him before he can print out the Smog Certificate.

Is he lying to me? I don't see what CEL Codes have to do with a smog computer printing out a certificate for a PASSED smog inspection, unless the CEL codes have something to do with o2 sensor or catalytic converter issues.

If he is not lying, is there any way to clear the CEL Codes without fixing the problem? I need to get the smog certificate before I have the time and money to fix the CEL Codes.

Thanks.

Here in Ohio, they will not pass you or even atempt the test if your CEL is on. You may want to try reseting the ecu to clear the codes and then go back and try the test.

Get it fixed and go back, hopefully you will not have to pay again. I usually do not have to pay if I don't pass

It is true that even if your vehicle passes the actual emissions test, if the check engine light comes on, they are not allowed to pass the vehicle.

Clearing the codes will not be a guarantee that they won't immediately come back, especially if there is something really wrong.

The OBD-II system (ECU) has to run trouble-free long enough to assure itself that no trouble codes are imminent before setting an OK for emissions clearance. Just clearing trouble codes won't do it.

See discussion, especially about readiness.

another note, don't get the smog done until you've really warmed the car up
