Default Center console foam...needed?

For whatever reason in the center console area where the shifter is located, there is some foam that is just falling apart.

I took it out as it' just making a mess in there. And it's crumbling when touched...like some odd grease residue on the foam it that's disintegrating it when you look at it.

I'm assuming there is no practical need for this foam, except for some NHV reductions? Or is this needed to protect wires and such from heat from the trans?

I don't believe this is part I can order from the dealer...I don't see it on the fiche.

You can also DIY and use insulation foam.
$5 at the hardware store.

yeah common for it to disintegrate as old as the cars are and not hard to replace

Yeah, my car was extremely low mileage and always stored in a garage with heat and AC. The foam literally crumbled when I tried to remove it to re-grease the shifter. Just crumbles with age.

I found this info online. You can use A/C weather Seal ( 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 x 42" ). Any big box store. Hope this helps.
