The reason you change the oil and filter at the same time is that you assume both have passed their use by date. The oil is dirty and contaminated and the filter clogged up with dirt and contaminates.

Ideally change them at the same time, but if you don't do the filter just change it a little later. No big deal.

if i take the filter out without draining the engine oil, will all the oil spill out from the filter hole? if not, i might as well just replace the filter.

If you let the car sit for a short time beforehand all the oil will drain to the sump. Shouldn't be any different to changing it at the same time as the oil.

i ask because on my previous car (2001 celica), if you unscrew the oil filter without draining the oil first, half of the engine oil will spill out from the oil filter hole. i'm trying to avoid that.

i'm gonna run my car, check the oil frequently and see if the oil/filter needs changing.

your oil hangs out in the oil pan

you've seen where the oil filter is on our engine right?

you're not going to lose half your oil.....

i agree, you should just let your car sit for a half hour or so then just take off the filter. it should all be pretty much drained back into the pan by then. even after driving my car a mile or so to get the oil heated to make it drain faster i barely get any oil out of the filter by the time i am done checking other fluids and checking the tire pressures.

Dude, you only have 3K on the filter. Just leave it. The oil change interval is 7.5K. If you are using the standard Honda PCX filter it should be fine unless you drive in severe conditions. Or.... change it if it makes you feel better.
