Changing my rings.
Well I have a 2000 and I am the 3rd owner. Ever since I have had the car I have babied it. I've had my occassional spirited drive but who hasn't. Well the last few months I have been having a lot of blue smoke on take off. If I sit at a light for a minute or two then as soon as I take off the smoke just rolls out. I did some test and I am getting a lot of blow by in cylinders 1 and 2 so with 112k on the motor I am getting ready to replace my rings. Does anyone have any tips that I need before taking on this task. I'm very knowledgable and mechnical so the work won't be a problem but some good tips are always welcome. Thanks. -Zane
Definitely look for cyl wall scaring. The 00-01 and early 02 cars had oil squirter banjo bolts that were not up to the task of running at very high rpm for long distances. In the US with lower speed limits Honda didn't think it needed the upgraded bolts that Europe got.
If anything else...upgrade the banjo bolts while doing the rings...as long as you are in there and have the oil pump out (one bolt hides behind the pump and is a bitch). 03 on in the US got the good bolts. Careful threading them though...lots of people seem to cross thread leading to
later.
Otherwise, tear down is a comparitive breeze. I watched a buddy tear down an F20C bottom end in an evening.
If you have a little extra cash...you have a great opportunity to do a stroker motor.

Yeah I'm that engine is a breeze (had to do some PM on it so far). But yeah oil pump, bearings, all the gaskets and it'll go through a pretty extensive cleaning while I'm in there. No, stroker either, I'm prepping for boost now.

the ap2's have a different part number for the rings...i am guessing this is the reason that ap2's do not consume as much oil as ap1.
i never checked to see if ap2 rings fit in ap1, but perhaps you can find that out.
