Changing Trans and Diff fluid
Hey guys,
Well Ive been readying up on some stuff and seems like the diff should be changed every 7500 miles. I bought the car at 15k and now it has 23k. The diff has never been done by me and I doubt the old man b4 me did it.
I know how to do it. I think the only thing I need is the little pump to get the fluid up there.
My question is this. I called my local honda dealer and they said they dont have the diff oil the shop manual calls for.
Hypoid gear oil
API Classification GL5 or GL6
Viscosity: SAE #90
All they have is SAE #80 85 oil and said...it should...it sjhould be fine but were not sure. We have never done diff fluid for n s2k here.
Im in buffalo ny, s2ks are rare.
Ive read a little bit on here that some have used Mobil 1 for the diff oil.
I autocrossed last yr and will probably do it again soon
What should I use?

LE 1605 SAE 110 GL5. I just bought 6 quarts locally today. It replaces LE 607 SAE 90 GL5. You can buy it from Ricks or Hardtopguy (site sponsors) if you can't find a local dealer. You only need one quart. You can buy a hand pump (I prefer the metal tube plunger type over the little plastic one) at any autoparts store.
If you plan to drive in below freezing conditions, I would recommend you use AMSOIL SVT 75W110. It has a much lower pour point and is an excellent gear oil.
M1 75W90 is very popular here, and has worked well if you decide to go with a lighter weight gear oil. I would not even consider using the Honda 85W. Honda does make a SAE 90 GL5, but it can only be found at motor cycle and marine stores.
You don't have to change it every 7500 miles. Many do it then, because it doesn't hurt to and they're probably changing the MTF at the same time. It is a very good idea that you are getting the OEM fluid out of there.
Have fun!

The dealer outsources to parts stores. They use either SAE80W-90 GL5 Hypoid or 75W-90 GL5 HYPOID.
75W-90 is fine. 80W-90 is fine. They are both available at parts stores.
MAKE SURE IT'S A GL5 OR ABOVE HYPOID LUBE. DO NOT GET ANYTHING WITH LSD ADDITIVES!!!
LSD additives are abrasive particles used for clutchpack LSDs. It's important that you do not get an oil with LSD additives.
Synthetic or regular works....your choice. IIRC, the diff interval is 15-30k depending on driving conditions.

The LE stuff rocks. I have never bought a pump, just a couple feet of large bore aquarium tubing and some duct tape around the top of the bottle and squish it. Heating the bottle up before really helps as LE is pretty thick. A warm pot of water is good for this.

I also thought the interval for the diff was 30k miles?
