Default Charging Issue: OVERCHARGING??

Hey guys!

So I am now on my second new alternator.. the original one died and set off the brake and battery light...I replaced it and when I drove, between 2-4k rpm the battery and brake light come on... ONLY WHEN I DRIVE.. so returned and got a new one.. now its between 3-6k RPMS battery light and brake light come on..

I tested the Battery and Alt and they pass......I dont have a scan tool that can run live data, so not to sure what's going on here. I feel as If it was the voltage regulator or something then the Alt wouldn't pass the testing?...

IF I HAVE MY HEADLIGHTS ON, THE ISSUE DOES NOT HAPPEN AT ALL!!!

You never said anything that deminstrates its overcharging (vs undercharging or some other issue).

What makes you think issue is overcharging? There must be more details you're not telling us.

The issue doesn't happen when my headlights are on.... more voltage is being used to power the headlights correct? which then maybe means instead of over charging the car now its correctly charging it sense the voltage being used up is perhaps correcting the overcharging amount?? I would say undercharging if battery and brake light were on 24/7.. but it comes on between certain RPM and it doesnt come on at all if I keep my headlights turned on.. so no headlights the issue is there... if I turn my headlights on, no issue... So I feel like thats overcharging.. but I test both components and they pass...

Thats literally it.. Alt died.. replaced it twice now, this is what I'm dealing with and I don't quite get it besdies its not an OEM Honda Alt.. its from auto zone

Start the car with a meter connected to the battery. Have someone bring the rpm up and down, what voltage do you see on the meter? If not much more than about 14.5V then it is not overcharging. Does the voltage fluctuate when you perform this test, and how much? If you are getting pretty stable charging voltage from this test, you are not over or under charging and the issue lies elsewhere.

Also, how did you test the battery and alternator?

Sounds like the problem is else where. Check ur grounds, battery terminals n power connections.

So I tested it, 14.5 volts, voltage did not increase when revving the vehicle.. so its not overcharging. I tested it with the school machine that does battery and alternator conductivity testing.

Check the grounds. Replicate the issue (battery + brake light on) at 3000-6000 RPM and measure voltage there. Make sure there is no belt slippage.

Question- does your digital dash "pulse"?

Mine did faintly, so I removed the alternator and replace the rectifier and brushes. The pulse is gone.

Not sure if related- I'm handy but not an electrical type guy.

That does sound like a rectifier-regulator issue.

My dash does pulsate, never thought about that honestly... to think though, I bought a new one and this issue was present and then returned it and got another and it still persists.. so to be handed to faulty alternators is tough to grasp, you know?
