cleaning the engine bay
BS? What part is BS?
It is well known in military and general aviation circles that Simple Green is highly corrosive to aluminum and it's use is prohibited by the Army in aircraft. Not sure what structural parts on our cars are aluminum but Simple Green contributes to hydrogen embrittlement of high strength aluminum parts.
If you want to use it that's fine with me. I ain't using it on anything remotely aluminum despite how well it cleans.

Your car will probably never fly to 35000ft.
There aren't any structural aluminum parts on a S2000 that I can think of.
At most, you'll get some aluminum staining.
The military and other aviation industries have to be overly cautious...because it is an airplane. And because there is a small, remote chance that simple green residue can end up in a hidden pocket of a structural aluminum part.
I'm not doubting you. I'm just saying...if you took every precaution that the aviation industry takes and applied it to your car, you'd never drive anywhere.
You risk staining your incredibly thick cast aluminum block or intake manifold if you leave simple green on there for hours and hours and completely ignore all of the use instructions.
If you leave hand soap on your skin for hours and hours instead of washing it off like the bottle says...you risk maybe getting a rash or irritation. Are you now going to avoid any type of hand soap that is not 100% proven by everyone in the universe to absolutely never give you a rash matter what happens? Or are you maybe just going to rinse your hands after using regular soap?
Know what else embrittles and corrodes aluminum? Road salt. Even if you don't drive your S2000 in salt...chances are there are aluminum parts on the car that you do drive in salt.
Again..no insults meant at all.
And again...there are products that are specifically safe for aluminum. Just make sure they dont harm rubber or paint or polymers.
Or use simple green as directed because its safe on everything....except if you let it sit on critical and delicate aluminum structures (that the car doesn't have any of) for hours.
Dish soap works surprisingly well, as I mentioned. Hopefully thats aluminum safe. I know it kinda stings your eyes. But I did once see a bottle near a sink at an optometrist.
Did you read any of the FAQs that B serious linked to?
I'm not saying EVERY engine bay needs SG, but one of these was 16 years old and had never been touched in 30K miles. The CR was GPW and FILLED with dirt and pine needles and was beginning to show algae growth.
Sorry Chuck, I know you
to bicker but I also know what works for me. Don't ever let me near your engine bay.
Nice try.
We all know what BS means.
1. it stands for BULL****
2. it is said when someone tells a lie
3. it is used when someone says something to suck-up
4. it is said when you literally see bull poo
5. a term used when you have to speak or write for a certain length and you have nothing better to say.

I think there is some miscommunication here lol.
Chuck seems to be offended by the implication that his statement about the airforce not using simple green was BS (as in "bullshit").
These threads always end in bloodshed.

Offended? Heck ya can't offend me! But calling me out for BS ("bullshit") on an open forum demands a response which has been restrained.
Now lets get back to techniques for cleaning the engine bay. You know I won't allow Simple Green near my cars (or boats or aircraft).
