Default Clicking from engine bay/transmission

Hello all,

As of late, my S has been making a noise upon acceleration. This sound occurs in all gears while traveling any speed but is most prevalent when the engine and trans are under the most load (flooring the gas with low RPM's in 6th). The sound is either non-existent at idle or is so soft as to not be heard. I took it in to the dealer and they told me they were unable to diagnose a problem without me paying for a $400 "tear down" of the transmition. I'd like to avoid this charge (and the ensuing cost of 'putting it back together') if it's something simple to fix.

I've run a search and come up with mostly threads about rear diff noise. This sound is coming distinctly from the engine bay and is persistent under all acceleration conditions. However, the sound does seem to fade away under engine braking. Thus, the sound is there when accelerating at 4,000 RPMs in 3rd but seems to disappear when decelerating in third at 4,000 RPMs.

Thank you in advance for any help you guys can provide.

WHY......are you flooring the car in low RPM's in 6th? I was under the assumption this was a recipe for a new diff.....

...to determine the source of the sound. Obviously this isn't a normal driving practice. The sound exists in all gears at all RPMs but is most prevalent under those conditions.

oh ok I thought you were meaning that it was a daily thing of yours to drive in such low RPM's.

when I first got this car it make so many noises that it drove me nuts. One in particular was more so of rapid "clicking" noises from the engine bay. I would hear it really loud as I accelerated from 2-5K. long story short, the dealer thought I needed a valve adj., got one, noise still there. I insisted it was the Timing chain tensioner, and noise was almost gone. I still hear it very faintly. But that may be b/c Honda's have such loud valves.

Did the sound you heard exist in all gears? Also, was it faint? The sound i'm experiencing is loud enough to be heard over moderate volume music.

You have pitted CV joints. They need to be replaced. Read here:

yeah, the sound was loud enough to hear at all times. It was really loud when I was in the drive through lane and I revved the engine to move and the noise would bounce off the wall.

Mine was the same with pitted CV joints.

Mine is similiar to your described noises, but i am leaning towards a valve adjustment + Timing chain tensioner. I can describe the noise as a sewing machine noise.

Not doubting you (as I'm sure you know much more about this than I do), but you'd still maintain that it was the CV joints even though it seems to be distinctly coming from the engine bay? From the limited amount that I understand, I thought that CV Joints were only in the rear of the vehicle.

Again, I'm not sure of any of this.
