Default Clicking/gearing noise on initial start up.

I'm getting a pretty loud clicking/gearing noise on the initial start up. The noise goes away after a few seconds from starting up. I tried recording it with my iphone but you can't really hear the noise from the recording. Anyone have experience with this? Sounds like it could be the pulleys or gears (sort of like a grinding noise).

It's the starter sticking. Pretty common issue. You can replace it or let it make the noise, doesn't really affect anything.

Would that explain why my start ups seem to be weaker? Thanks for the quick reply.

Or possible TCT rattle. Hard to say without hearing. But this is the only other thing that would really be a factor in your scenario.

I have billman's lifetime guaranteed TCT. So, I'm assuming its the starter since the noise goes away a few seconds after starting the car. Just checked prices on a new starter and its around 450.00?!?! damn thats an expensive part!

The TCT can do the same thing. Once oil pressure builds back up from draining out of the TCT overnight, it pressurizes after oil pressure builds. Not saying that's what it is, just that it can have the same symptom without hearing the exact noise. Its pretty distinguishable though, it sounds like cards in the spokes or a chain rattle which is exactly what it is. A starter sticking has its own distinguishing sound.

FWIW, you can get a reman starter from O'Reilly's for about $100, with a lifetime guarantee.

My starter has been making the same sound for two years now, although only on cooler mornings. I don't plan on replacing it until it goes out.
