clutch engagement point confusion

hmm i enjoy having my engagement about halfway up... but if this is the safest way to run it then i may try it out. I dont see how this would make shifts smoother though

trAP2 - I dont know why shifting is smoother, but it really is for me. I figured if its not bad for the car then why not.

These transmissions work best/smoothest when you give things a bit of time between shifts. By extending the clutch rod you are effectively giving the transmission a tiny bit more time from the point that the clutch is fully disengaged to the time you start your shift, we are talking very small amounts of time but it does help. Also quite often the smoothness of a shift is affected by the timing of the clutch disengagement and the point when your hand starts to move the shifter, I know in my case my hand sometimes moves the shifter ahead of my foot reacting to the clutch pedal, so by getting the clutch to disengage a bit sooner you can correct timing issues like that.

In cases where the clutch rod is really short , then the clutch isn't disengaging fully and that will cause roughness, hopefully there aren't too many s2k's running like that.

Because my clutch has been feeling a bit... off from standstill, I went and checked this tonight.

My pushrod doesn't shake until I actually press the pedal in a bit to relieve pressure. Is this what you mean by "free play"? Or would a pushrod that is too loose shake a bit even when the pedal is all the way out?

Also, When I touched the rod, I got some black oil/grease on my fingers. This normal?

I recently installed a South Bend 4 puck clutch and it works very well. My question is that the engagement point it almost all the way at the end of the pedal, while letting it out. Im not sure if this is harmfull to anything?

Hey MichiganAmuseS2000, ask Billman. Hes pro.
But from what i gather, when you have a good healthy clutch, it will engage as you say. As the clutch wears the engagement point raises from the floor.
