Alright guys first I would like to say hello from Calgary. My name is Dimitre and I purchased the car of my dreams about a week ago, a 2001 S2000.

I have come up on a little problem though. When the car is in gear and I just let it unwind and take my foot off the gas, it makes a grinding noise from 4000rpm all the way down to 2000rpm. Previously if I kept on the gas very slightly there wouldn't be such a noise but now you can hear it even when accelerating slightly. I just came home from a 1600mile trip with the car so I'm guessing if it is the clutch it got progressively worse. I don't think its the transmission because the shifts are very smooth and very precise, and it doesn't grind at all. The noise also seems to be coming from the hood not under the car.

Any suggestions on what could be wrong? Tonight as I was coming into the garage (I live on a steep slope) I think the clutch had a bit of a problem grabbing and there was a peculiar smell right after.

Is this the original clutch? You might be suffering from the infamous clutch buzz notorious for early s2000s. It doesn't cause any damage to the car, just annoying. But it sounds like your clutch is going bad anyways if its slipping.

 

It could be my imagination making me think that its my clutch slipping rather than something like a synchro ****ed in my tranny. It is quite loud though and I'll search the topic. Thank you guys.

Well after reading up it looks like I have the old 044 clutch and I guess I will have to live with it until I get upgrade.
