Unhappy Clutch/Transmission issues?

Hey guys,

Sorry if it's been covered before, but i didn't find anything related when i've searched.

The issue:
When i am standing still with the car, press the clutch and put in a gear, then without depressing the clutch, put it back into neutral, then depress the clutch... i hear some noise from the clutch/transmission. It would be described best as a "klonking" noise. Like metal hits metal.

It only happens when depressing the clutch for the first time. If i press it again while leaving the shifter in neutral position, then depress it again... nothing. If i press it again and put the shifter into any gear position, then into neutral, depress clutch... there's that klonking noise again. It's like a "clack!" sound.

Any ideas?

The car is a stock 2001 AP1 with 63'000km. All recalls were done when the previous owner still had it. I never abused the clutch, and the car is in pretty mint condition.

Thanks in advance! Any tips appreciated!

Check your clutch fluid for starts.

I sometimes hear the noise aswell when i'm backing out of a parking space in reverse and press the clutch to shift into 1st (i hear the noise before shifting into 1st, right when i press the clutch pedal).

The shifting doesn't seem rough. At least the shifter and transmission feels like everything's fine. The clutch feels a bit rough however when shifting, even tho the biting point is fine and it doesn't slip at all.

I also feel that the clutch buzz noise has increased slightly since this problem occured.

my car does give me the problem for a while now..still driveable but its just that the car will not shift really good anymore. i put on a new clutch master cylinder and a new slave cylinder also. bleed it so many time and put in honda mtf and gm sycro already too and still the same problem..

Mine is still driveable aswell. It doesn't sound like something is going to break any moment, but it's not normal.

After driving the car some more here are my new observations:

- The klonking noise when operating the clutch while standing still (described in the opening post) is probably nothing. It's minimal and maybe i've just never noticed before. It was almost gone when the car was "cold" and gets a tiny bit louder when warm.

- The actual klonking noise occurs when the car starts moving. It's loud enough so you can clearly hear it (windows open or closed). It only happens when starting to move, and not while shifting from 1st to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on. It feels like the clutch doesn't have much to do with it somehow. It sounds like when a handbrake is "rusted" to the brake disc after a car was standing for a long time and then gets moved again, but not as "violent". It could also be compared to the sound that springs make when a car gets jacked up and they decompress. It's usually one or two "klonk!"'s and then it's gone until i come to a stop and start moving again.

The car was serviced not too long ago, new brake pads since 2'000km, handbrake was adjusted recently (nothing much, it was fine anyway), oil and fluid levels are ok (low to normal oil consumption), tires are two months old, etc.

Any ideas what this could be? The differential maybe (car makes no ticking/klonking noise while cornering so far)?

PS: Sorry for the bad english.

Seems to me like it is just the brakes breaking free of the rotors at first roll? (Normal and most noticeable after a rain)

Or even (since you just adjusted it recently) you have your e brake set too close and it still is slightly engaged at first roll hence the sound.

does your have a hard time putting it in reverse. i have to put a lot of effort in it when the car starts and i let go of the clutchs. but if i hold the clutchs and starts, i can put it into reverse easy, but once i let go. its hard to put it back in. i have to hold the clutchs and put it in a gear then come back to reverse. it will go easy like that. i shift like a granny too and still i dont know why sometimes i will grind a gear. but it changes from different gear to gear. but mostly in 5th. do you have the same problem?

The noise occurs regardless if the car has been standing over night, or if i just do a stop at a light signal after driving for one hour. It isn't related to brakes i would say. The handbrake was adjusted about 2'000km ago when the brake pads were replaced. The noise started maybe 200km ago.

Reverse is fine. Actually, shifting is no issue at all for me, no problems there.
