i bought a used TR1 exhaust off of another owner and when it arrived I discovered a rattle from inside the muffler. It isn't crazy, but sounds like a lot of dust/small particles. I tried shaking it out with no luck. I am trying to figure out if I should be upset. cosmetically it looks fine, but I don't want to have issues with it rattling and sounding like crap.

Is it normal for there to be some amount of debris in a used exhaust and I am just not aware because the OEM is far too heavy to shake?

 

Upon further inspection I can feel a much bigger portion "clunk" when I shake it. It doesn't sound metallic but feels like the muffler materials shifting. I am thinking this isn't normal and the exhaust may sound like crap when I get it on. Aside from sound is there any other concerns? I wouldn't think the muffler breaking up could cause any clogging like a cattalitic converter could it?

 

Packing moving around isn't really uncommon, but it sucks repacking a car muffler. I guess you don't have much to loose bolting it on

Cat will be fine, and makes it easier on the packing since you're probably not going to shoot flames through the cat and burn the packing material up.

I am going to be running a HFC, my reference to the cat was to say that running a muffler with loose internals shouldn't be like running a cat with loose internals. I wouldn't think there would be a way that the internals would cause a restriction in a muffler that is a straight flow through design.

So if the only deal is sound sound then yeah I guess I bolt it up and see!

yeah, it sounds like a bunch of dust in there too. Is there any chance it hurts performance? Reading online I see a lot about repacking dirt bike mufflers and a lot say that loose packing could hurt performance.

Also on closer inspection the one one side of the baffle on the resonator is busted away

the seller made things right by refunding me a bit, so I am going to take my chances or try to repair it myself.

 

If the baffle is loose it could block the exhaust path significantly.
Is it a titanium exhaust?

 

you're not gonna like the sound of the rattling baffle when you have it on.

i think the muffler is just a piece of a weld, IDK that it will actually make a sound. The resonator just seems to have separated from the one side, my guess is it was early in the life of the exhaust. I am thinking that this might not rattle either as it is surrounded by packing and doesn't touch metal, but I may be wrong

 

Oh it will rattle for sure I just hit it with my hand and it bangs around.
