Default Diff or drive shaft?

Hey just drove my car before and i notice a very low noise coming from there rear of the car, as i kept driving it got worse and ended up like a loud knocking that made the car rattle..after i pulled over i got a mate to push it forward and back the noise change when i pushed it back and then front, there is no whining noise. he think its either the drive shaft, tail shaft or diff....what are the main symptoms for a faulty diff?

cheers Tommy

It's probably going to be a bad diff. The other parts, while they break... don't break often unless the car is boosted and drag launching.

I've sheared pinion gear teeth off two differentials. One was cryo'd.

Just drained the diff fluid and there is shaved metal pieces on the drain bolt but not anywhere else, oil was very thick and slighty cloudy....I moved the wheels again and the clicking noise seems to have dissapeared, what should i try next?
