Default Differential Blown - Advice Needed Please!

I have a 2002 S2k with about 85k miles on it. My differential went out on me Friday afternoon so I had it towed to the local Honda dealer. Long story short - Honda told me it would be about $5,000 to repair the differential!! The guy I spoke with said there were chunks in the diff fluid and that they have not taken the diff apart but it definitely was the problem. He also said that the diff itself was the majority of the cost - about $4,000 to replace so it doesnt sound like they have any intentions of taking the unit apart to consider a rebuild.

So my question is this - what other options to have have outside of dropping $5k for Honda to swap out the differential? I have read that it could potentially be rebuilt - but I am sure someone would have to take it apart to find out for sure.

I am in the Atlanta area so if any of you know of anyone qualified to work on this for me, PLEASE let me know. I need my ride up and running ASAP.

As a side note - the rep at Honda called me back a few minutes after he dropped the $5k bomb on me yesterday morning. He told me he was going to take my situation to his boss and the Area Mgr/Director (or whatever) for Honda and see if they could help me out with the situation. I am not sure if anything will pan out with this so I wanted to go ahead and start researching for a plan B or C....

Seems like an all too common problem with the S2k... I have rarely launched my car and really dont ride it that hard in general.

TIA in for advice you guys can provide.

My mechanical knowledge is quite limited, but I see used diffs that appear to be in good working condition in the marketplace for sale forum and local for sale forums on s2ki for as low as $500.

i'd order two bullet proof puddy differentials with higher ratios than to just get another oem differential that'll blow again with the same 4.10 gear. $5K, whatever.

Labor should be about 500. A used diff in the FS forum, 800 MAX.
Your dealer is taking you for a ride. New form Honda the diff is 2800.

Unless there is more to the story, a diff replacement shouldnt be 5k

Good luck

In case anyone is interested to know, I spoke with S2KPuddyDad and he has provided me some much more reasonable options for getting my diff replaced. Thanks for all the suggestions.
