Default Differential fluid

I ordered differential fluid from a Honda dealer and was given something called "Honda Pump Fluid", which I installed a few weeks ago.
Today, a fellow S2K owner told me that it might not me the right stuff. I was surprised, but not shocked.

What say you experts?

Never heard of it. Be safe and drain it out. There are several others you can use but Mobil-1 gear oil is readily available everywhere Search the forum if you'd prefer something else.

Honda Pump Fluid is for the rear diffs in CRV and Pilots, AWD vehicles, dont think that will be the right stuff in a rear drive diff.

That pump fluid has been known to destroy an S2000 diff in a matter of hours. A few dealers have already had to replace customer diffs because of this STUPID mistake. After a few weeks of it being in there, I think some permanent damage has been done to the LSD. Your dealer owes you a brand new diff. Once damage has occurred, it cannot be repaired. They try to con you. Don't let them. Contact Honda USA.

I would be concerned about permanent damage as well, but this may be a tough battle because he bought the fluid from the parts department and installed it himself. He'll have to show (prove?) that they sold it to him for use in a S2000, which is the incorrect application. I say go for it anyway, but in the end they may tell you it's not their problem. Depends on how honest of a dealership it is.

Like the others in this thread said, If you're driving the car at all you should put the proper fluid in there immediately. Mobil 1 75W-90 is available at almost every parts store and works great.

This became such a problem that Honda Canada issued the following memo to all Canadian dealers. I believe a similar memo was issued to US dealers as well. They should have known better.

I just made the change right away, after driving for 500 or so miles on the wrong fluid.
I ordered Honda differential fluid, didn't mention S2K, not thinking different cars. Yes, they should have asked.

I don't think any damage has been done by the way the car drives, hope that doesn't change.

Thanks everyone, and cross your fingers that everything is OK.

That's good, hopefully 500 (easy?) miles wont cause any significant wear, but someone more knowledgeable than myself would have to say.

If you just asked for Honda differential fluid without specifying the s2000 I'd definitely say you're on your own unfortunately. We have all had those "oh shit" moments, I hope your diff is OK.

If you're ever uncertain about what part or fluid is needed, there is a wealth of information on s2ki and you can always ask. Usually safer than trusting the dealership unless you know they are knowledgeable on the s2 .

You may have lucked out and nothing bad happened. That fluid has been known to ruin an S2000 diff before the car gets home from getting it changed at the dealer shop. Normal driving won't show any symptoms. It's the LSD (limited slip diff) that gets damaged by the wrong fluid. You won't know anything until it starts to make weird noises or until you have road conditions that requires the LSD to work (such as loose/slippery road surfaces or in a case where you are doing very tight slow speed turns - U turns, corners or maneuvering in a parking lot). A slow speed, tight figure "8" is one test. Do it now and a few months from now and see if there are any developing differences.

Do a search on how long that fluid has lasted in the s2k dif. Most don't make it 100 miles.

You will be VERY lucky if the dif doesn't self destruct (I mean HONDA DEALER destruct) in the next few hundred miles.

I'd go back to Honda and give them a piece of my mind. 13 friggin years later and they still can't get a simple FLUID APPLICATION right on ONE CAR!

Honda you are a disgrace.
