Differential Solution?
my pinion gear broke...the teeth were all gone..or broke off. My ring gear is fine..and the bearings are bad too. The casing looks like it was cased very bad. Its not cleanly done at all from a look in the inside. Hopes this helps
Des,
Des,
Its hard to tell if the casting is bad just by looking at the inside. For one they dont finish insides when they dont have to, and another just cus it looks like crap doesnt mean the material cast doesnt have its integrity. (That doesnt mean that its cast well either
)
I, like anyone else, am impressed with complete engineering. My press (at work) worth about 1.5 million when new, is the greatest machine to work on because they do finish the insides, and everything is "over" engineered.
Anyway, these two failures sound very different from the rev's and I wonder what happened in Vaportrail's car.
But maybe they are related? casing flex? Im gonna stick my camera down there to watch the diff. maybe something will show up?

heh this isnt really the thread to ask that but its bumping 190-200 RWHP to about 280-290 RWHP
So it's about 50% more power . . .
It may not be worth it if youre gonna be blowing out your diff. all the time

Ok i have an update and an idea that my dealer back home shared with me. If only my pinion gear sheered. My diff maybe fine. In fact the mechanics said that there is a really high chance that my diff is fine and that all i need to replace is the pinion gear. This is why. My ring gear is perfectly fine. I have to replace them both because they come in a set but that should be all i have to replace honda is telling me. And it makes really good scense. Please share with me what you think.
Des,
OH..the Gear set and its bearings are $460.87.

Des,
I can't even imagine the amount of violent force it would take to bust all the pinion gear teeth off!
How can your ring gear be unscathed? No f'ing way man!
In any case, with teeth busted off, the diff case must have seen some pretty severe loading and the bearing seats and cups could have cracked.
Better take a real close look at the case itself before you sink money into the rebuild with existing parts.
Just my $0.02

G1S2k,
I agree with RT about the gears, they had to push on something that didnt move to break (Ring Gear)
Unless the pinion bearing was sooo shot that it backed away from the ring and busted the teeth on the casing . . .
but then why would your dif. lock up when pushing it? I do remember the story right don't I? You were pushing it and it would lock ? I figure if it locked side to side then something within the Torsen unit or the ring/pinion were jamming, and you would see evidence of that, not just the pinion.
I miss my car, its in the shop for another 2 weeks . . .

my ring gear is fine though..thats what i dont get. In fact...its soo good that they dont want to replace it but i am anyway. I dont get it either. and neither did honda. when the diff locked...i was going 30mph on a city street. no sooner than it locked..i coasted it to a stop in a gas station..but this damage is damage that occured over time. I dont get it either. but my friend who works on supras says that when the pinion gears break on those ..the diff is usually fine. its the pinion or ring gear that gives.

G1S2K,
Isn't your car under warranty? I have the same problem right now, and I am waiting for them to get a go signal from the guy in California. The guy from Cal said that if the ring gear and/or the pinion breaks, its not under warranty because it was abused. But I never dropped my clutch. I only have 26,500 on MY 2000. I have the extended warranty too. But the thing is, I am worried because the dealer said that I have to shell out $4k just to fix the car. I hope you can give me some info. Thanks
