Default Discontinued Parts -Scary Times Ahead?

I seem to find more and more AP1 parts for my MY '01 S are being discontinued by Honda. What gives? I just bought an '05 torque sensor on eBay and hope that either cleaning my original unit, with 94Kmiles on it, will work, or if I need to put in a new (used) one. What other parts should i start stock-piling in order to keep my S "forever"?

Generally speaking, many parts are D/C after 10 yrs.

Correct. OEM's are only really required to provide 10 years of support. Specialty cars like the S2000 are prone to get parts becoming hard to find over time. If parts are in enough demand, some aftermarket or bespoke fabricators may step in.... but image if you had a car like my friend's Vauxhall Chevette... probably less than 200 in existance... but he keeps it on the road. There will be ways. I'm not as enthusiastic as I sound tho... I just got my S and already looking for discontinued torque sensor... ugh...

You could consider what I am considering... buy a whole car and strip it for parts... turn the chassis into a race car.... gawd I need a 5th job...lol

Well, I cannot afford to buy a whole new car, but maybe I can afford to buy a spare part now and then. Storage space is also a concern. I don't have room to garage a second S. Does anyone have a recommendation on what parts have been known to fail (few, as I imagine), yet that I might want to consider buying ahead of time?

That would be a question you would want to pose to the various S2000 specialty repair shops. They are all here with a presence on the board. I would ask them what are the most common parts that fail, that aren't super expensive, that may be hard to find in the future, that I might want to buy a few to stock up on.

but, I wouldn't worry about it too much, we will always be able to find whatever we need. it just might take a little time and effort, so I would always have another car you could drive, if your S2000 is down for the count

Having worked at a Honda dealership for numerous years, and having owned an Integra Type R for 8 years, parts for the S2000 wont get to be like the ITR. Want to find ITR specific parts? Good luck. They hoard their parts (I'm slightly guilty of it too) and dont want to sell. If they do, you wont like the prices. S2000 wise, only thing I would stock up is torque sensors for steering racks and maybe windsheild weatherstripping and moldings. Everything else that is good has been discontinued. AP1 engine blocks are long gone now. As are OEM AP1 front lips. Floor mats are plenty bountiful, and they even have replica oem mats nowadays. Gasket kits are in plenty supply by either Honda or OEM aftermarket companies so that isnt an issue. One small thing I noticed that went discontinued 2-3 months back, is the replacement glass for ap1 gauge clusters. I bought one couple months ago, and was going to buy another to stock up incase someone needs one, but those are gone now too.

I thought that the gauge cluster cover was plastic, not glass?

I think glass is just a figure of speech...

I too recently started thinking about this. I stared thinking about parts that may not be available in the aftermarket in the future.

Things like starters and alternators can be rebuilt by specialists if push comes to shove.

The brake master is 2000-2005 specific.

Calipers can be dealt with aftermarket brake kits if need be.

Water pump is S2000 specific so maybe a problem OEM in the future.

What I did buy from Honda was a complete set of cooling hoses. I could see these, especially the small ones, could be hard to replace in the aftermarket. I wiped them down with 303 Aerospace and put them in a vacuum bag like you use to store cloths. Put the bag in a dark closet..

I might pickup a OEM brake master cylinder and water pump. Maybe also clutch hydraulics. They too are s2000 only.

Just want to have parts that have no " work around ".

Billman has posted, if I am not mistaken, that he has never replaced a failed water pump.
