still a child. :p CORNER!

anyway, I think this $5 mod is definately worth it if you are going to use your engine to the limit like on the track.

I'll probably do it before I attend FC05. ;)

FYI, J's Racing sells something for this as well. See

:iagree: In nearly 38 years of owning cars and doing my own oil changes, I have never seen any of my filters come loose. In fact, each and every one of them required a good, healthy turn with a filter wrench just to get them to unscrew by hand. Those who have experienced loosening oil filters can't be installing them in the right manner.

Only 24 years behind the wheel for me...and never had a filter come off when I didnt want it to happen.

Nothing to lose by using Billman's mod or the safety wire approach but I think RTFM applies here to some extent.

Don't get me wrong. I think Billman's idea or any kind of filter lock is still a good idea for track use. Those are the harshest conditions (in a short period of time) that a car can go through.

Had a few filters spin off at the race track at FC04 this weekend. One engine is history, one is noisy at idle. This mod costs less than five bucks, and should be mandatory at the track.

Get a carb return spring, cut it and make a hook on each end (tool pic). The finished length should be 8 inches.

Get a hose clamp with a screw-5/16 hex head, and lightly tighten it around the very base of the filter, leaving it temporarily loose enough to turn...

Install the filter, and tighten it. I would recommend using a oil filter socket, and 3/8 drive ratchet (tools pic)

Position the screw at the 3 o'clock position, as viewed from the passenger side of the car (screw facing front). Using a nut driver, tighten the clamp (tool pic)

Attach the spring around the clamp in the screw hole, and hook it in the boss in the engine the second pic...this is the view from the bottom of the car.

It was mandatory back in my mcy racing days to safety spring all three oils...Filter, fill cap, and drain plug.

Can pictures of this mod be post again please, I'm not sure which part of the engine bay I should hook the spring up to.

what about using oil filter adaptors when using a oil pressure sensor? Any incidents where the adaptor came loose or the oil filter coming loose from the adaptor?

I think these incidents are rare and you can't draw a general conclusion when there are plenty of people who "properly" do DIY oil changes and seem to do fine.

I am going to have to agree with mikegarrison and xviper... xviper has been driving cars longer than I have been alive?!?! :D
