It sounds like he has a bad spot in the starter and it was pulling way too much amperage. This will definitely drain the battery. Also the voltage drop is normal when putting load on the system, if it didn't go back up then you have charging problems, but it did its job. I would go to a shop that has a VAT40 or something equivalent to double check everything, but it sounds like you have it all solved!
