Default Does A Stock Clutch Get Stiffer After Its Broken In??

hey guys,

my friend just bought an 04 S2000. He drove my MY00 and asked if i had an aftermarket clutch in it cuz he said it felt stiffer. i said no its just the stock clutch. when i drove his 04 S2000, i noticed his clutch felt soft as hell. is it cuz the car only has like 300 miles on it and it needs to be broken in? or is there something wrong with my clutch and thats why its so stiff. thanks

check your clutch fluid's condition, if its really dark you will need to change it out with dot4 brake fluid.

I read here that clutches after '00 got lighter by design.

Perhaps it is because of the new clutch mechanism used in the 2004s that prevents damages to the clutch and drivetrain due to the sudden release of the clutch pedal?

Maybe this mechanism causes a softer pedal feel?

Any comments on this?

Double post and I can't delete it. The delete rules on this forum are retarded. I wrote it, I should be able to delete it!

Your clutch is probably fine. My MY00 clutch is much stiffer than any later model year S2000 I have driven, and I have driven a few.

Clutch "hardness" or "softness" is primarily dependent upon the Pressure Plate and the mechanical advantage of the master and slave cylinders. The thing you are describing is a valve mechanism in the clutch hydrolics and should not affect how hard it feels. Road Rage has a thread that describes this best.

I have quite a stiff clutch pedal on my '02. I am thinking it is the slave cylinder. xviper et al., I am thinking of retrofitting the '04 slave cylinder. Do you advise for or against this?
