Just trying to rule out some stuff with my CEL problem, but does VTEC engage if the car is in neutral?

I'm sure it probably would at some RPM, but I'm not sure. However, if your VTEC engagement is controlled by a piggy-back, then it probably would regardless of load.

My buddy in his 01 si unplugged his spedo sending harness from his tranny to save miles (idiot ), and when it was unplugged vtec would not engage. So to answer the question, the car has to be registering speed for vtec to engage.

I dont know about if you are using a piggyback computer though...

If it's like every other honda then no it will not engage in neutral. In the 5G prelude I think you have to be going something like 12 mph before it will engage. Not sure what it is on the S, probably says in the helms manual (if someone has one handy).

The V-tec will not engage unless the engine is under load i.e. moving.

Ummm....last time I went to a dealership and fired up an S2000 (yeah, I'm 18 and can't afford an S *yet*), I waited till the engine was warmed up (3 bars) and revved a bit in neutral, and unless my ears were lying to me, VTEC definitely sounded like it engaged where it normally does (about 6000rpm). My experience/ $.02.

The Vtec will engage when certain paramaters are met. IE the coolant has to be up to temp, etc.

From that point on, it will engage at a pre-determined point when under full throttle. Under partial throttle, it will still engage, but at slightly higher rpm.

FYI in reverse the fuel cutoff is at 7k rpm.

It has been reported that the S2000 is different in this respect.. Apparently they figured out it was impossible to maximize acceleration in this platform without a VTEC launch.
