Engine Bay Temps
ive planned quite a few mods to reduce engine bay temps and intake cooling so i thought i should start measuring some temperatures to back things up. i know quite a few people on here will probably shoot me down about how the measurements were carried out. if this test can be improved please tell me. no suggestions of sticking it in a wind tunnel to control conditions etc
recording the engine/manifold temps was the best sort of control i could think of to show how hot i was running as we cannot control enviromental/traffic conditions.
to date i have tried the muz intake and a home made version of the ztec industries CF air box heat shield. still to go on the car and as yet untested are the hondata insulator and a race spec int/ext ceramic coated ricks manifold.
i did 4 runs w/wo intake and heat shield and got the results below. basically when using the muz intake you get 10C drop in air box temp in 30-40 mph stop/start driving. i know for a fact after a recent 35 mile drive at 70mph on the Mway the airbox was much colder to touch. so the faster you go the denser the air. also with the intake removed and the oem trumpet thing on the car the car felt less responsive.
i will update this as i add more mods that will affect the engine bay temp.

tbh when i put the heat shield on and tried to guage the temp change by hand i was disappointed so i didnt think of just trying it with the heat shield but i could do that at some stage.
You cant see the heat shield too clearly from the pics when its on the car.its similiar to the ztec industries one that ricks sell.

saxo boy also metioned complete covering the aitbox in heat reflective material should do they job as he read a thread about it. no point doing a search for it on here!

I was not happy with the restriction in the narowest point of the snorkle as it is has a much smaller cross sectional area than the throttle body. I added the first 3 inch pipe in front of the fan this runs down to the plastic tray area and pulls cold air from the existing holes. The cross section to the pipe is bigger than the throttle body but still less than the standard rectangular intake hole so I added a second pipe from the side of the airbox to the hole at the side of the rad on drivers side.
I run a temp guage in the airbox and it runs at a steady 20 degrees once the engine bay has warmed up.
I now have a cold air supply with a 50% bigger feed area.
the whole box is covered with heat reflective tape, I don't like the look but it will do for now.
