I noticed that you have a 2002. I used to own a 2002 as well and the P1456 code would come up quite often even though i tighten the cap to 3 clicks. What i've noticed (as well as other 2002 owners) is that the cap will not seal correctly because the gas tank nozzle is deformed and out of round. The proper fix for this is to replace the fuel filler neck. Or you can just live with it and tighten the cap by grabbing the outside edge of the cap like you would a soda cap bottle and tighten as much as you can. The 3 click thingy can be misleading if you tighten it the normal way.

edit:

here's a thead about it from the past:

My 2002 has the same problem. I just grab the cap on the outside like suggested above and it works fine.

So there's no TSB available? I just started having this problem recently, too. Like others, I've found that I can avoid it by squeezing the rim of the cap while tightening, instead of using the normal 'handle' thing. But that's a real nuisance.

'03 Silverstone here.

Would cleaning the filler neck and adding a new gas cap cure the problem.

For our cases, no. Theres nothing wrong with the cap itself. Its the fuel filler neck that is deformed.

I've been thinking about this for a while, wondering if it will work.

The filler neck is egg shaped, which causes the cap threads to bind before the cap seal can seat against the filler neck, causing the P1456.

If you measure the neck with a vernier caliper, and fine the large part of the egg, you could likely give it a light squeeze with water pump pliers and make it round.

I'll try it on my next s2k, I'll post up in a few days.

If I had the necessary tools, I'd go do it right now... but alas, I don't. Should I be able to find verniers at my local auto parts place (NAPA, O'Reilly, etc)?

Yup...or use any tool that you can make up. Like a coat hanger cut off and bent into a U the size of the filler neck. The tightest spot is the widest spot
