It's all the same stuff, petroleum distillates.

What makes you think you need to do this? Did you pull the valve cover or oil pan to inspect? If you've been using good quality oil and changing regularly, there is no need for a motor oil flush treatment.

I would recommend and actually use Auto-Rx on my vehicles for engine cleaning:

http://auto-rx.com/

For carbon buildup I would recommend BG fuel system products...professionally if you think you have a serious problem.

If you've been using a good oil and maintaining it well you likely don't need anything, but something like auto-fx like Indy recommended is a great product to use for safe gentle cleaning. I would not use any of the stronger kerosene based stuff you buy over the counter. The good thing about auto-rx is t he cleaning that is done on the piston ring landings, which can keep the piston rings working as intended, many times they can get stuck due to deposits. Auto-rx is available online and it requires a bit of a process but it is the only thing I would use on this vehicle.

My car is an 01' with 135k miles. There is no sludge in it. If you're running a good synthetic, it's rare to get large sludge deposits.

I just got a new dd, has 220k on it. Had the valve cover off and noticed some sludge. Should I use the auto-rx stuff?

That is the only product I'd use due to it's gentle cleaning approach, other products that try to clean it quicker with harsher ingredients may cause internal blockages to occur which can be harmful to the engine, read up on the auto-rx website.

One other approach is to run some short intervals on high mileage oils which tend to be good at cleaning.

same. If you take my valve cover off you would think it is new but it is really 10 years old.
