Default Engine Idle Rattle/Chatter

Hi all,

After much searching here and having done YouTube to death, I need advice.. and reassurance/a reality check!

My (UK) 06 engine has developed a cold idle rattle, started out of the blue 3 months ago during cold weather whilst warming up, with an inconsistent and very minor chatter/lash noise, very infrequent and never from key on. Has since become more frequent during warm up but still not at key on. Warm engine does quieten it down, possible (increasing) piston slap?

Not removed the pan yet but VTEC solenoid was clean.

Vid 1 (example noise after month 1, at 05s, 08s and 010s):

Vid 2 (noise now, but nowhere near this frequent):

Some background:
- 108k now, owned since 75k.
- Compression equal on all 4 (about 210).

- Original TCT (but never made the noise).
- Never below 3/4 on oil, Fuchs Pro S 5w40.
- OEM parts (filters etc).
- Head has been off, no issues seen (retainers, loose fixings etc).
- Valves done 1k ago.
- Never over-revved (by me)
- Always warmed and cooled.

I've found other theads and videos, but never an actual solution/confirmation. All info appreciated!

Check your rod bearings... inconsistent tap at idle such as the one in vid #2 usually is rod bearing issue. Any cold start engine knock?

1. 108k now, owned since 75k + Original TCT (but never made the noise). Primary "rattle" suspect.

2. Head has been off, no issues seen (retainers, loose fixings etc). Head off? or Valve cover removed? Getting the head back on properly is very detail oriented, valve cover not so much.

Hope it's a simple fix.

That was my worry , but there's none at all at key on, only starts after 1/2 mins into idling, and only since the cold weather.

Me too, TCT is next despite not finding a noise like it via others. Rod bearings next when I can get to a garage!

*Only had the valve cover off so far to check clearances, retainers etc, nothing unusual!
