Engine RPM suddenly drops when held in VTEC

Its probably your car dropping out of VTEC. In wich case it is normal.

Definitely not that - unless it can randomly happen above 7000rpm...

Yes your car can drop out of vtec above 7000 rpm. And the instance you described sounds like the type of time it would happen.

Why would that happen?

Also - why would it cause a CEL?

You sure the engine isnt cold and just preventing damage to itself? Could be faulty temp sender?

I had the same thing happen to me just once. Holding about 6k in preparation to pass on a slight uphill grade, the revs dropped all the way down to idle and very quickly, as if I had let off the gas and pushed in the clutch, even though I was still on the gas and nowhere near the clutch. No CEL for me. I clutched and put the car out and into gear and continued on my way without any further issues. Scared the cr@p out of me.

well do your rpms drop significantly or is it just dropping out of vtec? You can be in the rpm range for vtec but not switch lobes as it is a combinaton of throttle position and rpms. So you could be going into vtec then letting off then dropping out.
