Default Engine scratches off cold start

Hi I’m really new to this if anyone could help would be really appreciated. If I haven’t driven my car for a couple of days once I press the engine start after the engine has started it makes a scratching noise. I have had an oil filter and oil change as I thought this would fix it but it’s still happening
any suggestions??? Thanks

As Billman said, its the starter and its very common. Performing a google search should yield tons of threads but to keep it short you have a few options

1. Replace starter
2. Rebuild/Regrease starter (inconsistent results from my research)
3. Nothing (it will not harm your car)

Worst. Sound. Ever.

I'll be replacing mine when I decide to change the coolant hoses.

Mine has been doing it for almost a year. I've even got a new OEM starter here... just an annoying job.

Learn how to let go of the start button just before the engine starts and you won't have this issue anymore.

Not true. That is not necessarily the cause. Replaced my starter and problem solved! First one lasted 363,000 miles!

Its a cold weather thing. It happens to virtually all S when its cold enough out.

Its annoying. Its embarrassing. Its harmless.
