Default engine start up

Hope some can help. This doesn't happen all the time. It only seems to happen when its cold and it just heard it maybe 3-4 times within the last two months. But when I hit he start button, the engine cranks and then starts up but right after it turns over, i get this weird sound kind of a screech but not high pitched. it's sounds to me like a metal on metal rubbing. it's 1second and then gone. it only happens in the morning on the first start up of the day.
anyone ever have this problem.
thanks

I get that crap too! sounds like the starter dosen't disengage from the flywheel. I would think I might be ok long as it is only for a milisecond and dosen't happen @ every start. let me know what you think.

thanks for you input. I'm not very techinical, so I'm just trying to get everyone elses opinion/thoughts and then i'll bounce it off my bro who is the techinician in the family. i didn't think the starter and flywheel connected in that way though.

Is it cold over there?
All my cars make that noise when left out in the cold(I live in Omaha).

nope.. fan and a/c are off. and it has been fairly cold lately. overnight has been down to low 40's maybe high 30's .. there has been frost in the mornings. but i had it the whole winter last year and it didn't make that sound.

gab,
i don't think battery, because for me, it happens after the engine turns over. prior to the noise, startup is strong - battery and starter crank her right up.

Just happened to me for the first time yesterday, after a fairly cool night (mid-40's). I smelled a little rubber burning associated with the screech. It occurred just after the start sequence. My guess is the accessory drive belt slipping or maybe the secondary air pump getting ready to give up the ghost.

My camery did it real bad when it was cold out. It felt like it was the power steerng ans the wheel would have some vibration to it. The temp was also in the 30's and lower.
